The dangers of Japanese Encephalitis Virus have been highlighted again, as SA Health launches a new vaccination campaign.

Those who spend time near the River Murray are able to receive a free immunisation against Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV), which is one of the deadliest mosquito-borne diseases found in South Australia.

Prior to 2022 JEV was not known to occur in southern Australia, and has since been detected in mosquitoes and animals in the Riverland, in particular the Loxton Waikerie council area.

Vaccinations for influenza are also now on offer for as many as 600,000 south Australians though the National Immunisation Program.

Chief Public Health Officer, Professor Nicola Spurrier says the best protection is always prevention, whether it’s the flu, COVID-19 or mosquito-borne diseases.
