A program developed in the Riverland to attract and retain doctors is now set to be rolled out further across the state.

Under the Single Employer Model (SEM) an additional 60 GP and rural generalist registrar training places will be funded, which follows the success of the Riverland Academy of Clinical Excellence (RACE) initiative led by the Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network.

According to health officials this has increased the RMCLHN medical workforce both in hospitals and general practice by over 25%.

The additional places are being supported though a Federal & State government funding partnership, with Federal Health Minister Mark Butler saying he looks forward to working collaboratively with the Malinauskas Government to make training and working in rural general practice a more attractive option for young doctors.

Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network Chief Executive Officer, Wayne Champion also made comment, saying “The Single Employer Model had allowed the network to engage Trainee Medical Officers for the whole of their post-graduate medical training pathway, from graduation with a medical degree to Fellowship as our employees”
