The Atari is coming back, but it won’t be cheap

Retro gaming has seen a significant revival of late with both the NES and SNES returning to shelves in miniature form and many classic games getting remastered or rebooted. And now one of the most iconic game consoles of all time is returning – the Atari.

Atari isn’t following in the footsteps of Nintendo however with a miniature version of an existing console, but are instead releasing a whole new machine.

The Atari VCS is described by Atari as “a completely modern gaming and video computer system, blending the best of consoles and PCs to delight a whole new generation of gamers and creators.”

According to the company, “users will enjoy an ever-expanding Atari world of all-new games, classic and remastered favourites, streaming media and personal apps.”

The console boasts a retro aesthetic featuring wood paneling like the original, the iconic Atari joystick controller and a controller that closely resembles that of an Xbox. Under the hood you’ll find an AMD processor and graphics card, USB support, WIFI and the ability to accommodate a solid state drive.

It won’t come as a cheap alternative to the next generation Playstation and Xbox consoles however, going at $699 for the basic console and $849 for a package including the two controllers.

The Atari VCS will be available in Australia later this year.
