River Murray

River Murray water levels have returned to normal pool level in the Lock Six weir pool this week following a successful lowering trial which began more than a month ago.

Water levels were lowered by 18 centimeters to help improve the health of riverbanks and wetlands.

Jarrod Eaton from the Department for Environment and Water said the lowering event was the first time that water levels were deliberately lowered below normal operating range for environmental benefit.

Jarod also said “The department is planning to raise water levels in the Lock Five and Lock Two weir pools in late July or early August, but this will depend on flow conditions and water availability.”

The department encourages all River Murray water users to look at improving flexibility with their pump setups (current and future) where possible, given the likelihood that there will be more variable water levels along the River Murray in the future.
