The Mid-Murray Council will hold a supplementary election to fill a vacant seat, now less than 12 months out from the Local Government Elections.
As per the local government legislation an election must be held if the seat is vacant for more than one year prior to an election.
The vacancy of a seat on the Eyre ward follows the death of Councillor Dennis McCarthy who passed away last month, just two weeks prior to the 12 month mark from the elections.
Mid-Murray Mayor Burgess stated the running of the election was a big cost to council, and thought the Minister may have had provisions to add discretion to omit the running of supplementary elections so close to the cut-off date.
The Mayor added while it’s great someone will get experience the timing of the elections and the caretaker mode period next year means it’s less than ideal.
Nominations open on the 30th of December and close on the 13th of January next year.
More details can can be found via the Council.
