In what is good news for regional health patients, government subsidised telehealth will be extended, a move welcomed by the Rural Doctors of Australia (RDAA), however are warning of potential issues.
RDAA president Dr John Hall said “The post COVID telehealth model needs to ensure access to quality care is available, aligned with the patient’s needs, and particularly suitable for our most vulnerable patients,”
Dr Hall added “If telehealth is opened to pure phone or video conferences, with any doctor, anywhere, pretty soon we are going to see call centres set up where that is all they do,”
The RDAA is also calling for telehealth to be limited to patients consulting with their regular GP, or another doctor working within their known practice, that also provides face-to-face care.
