I Don’t Want To Be A Pie…Chicken Run Sequel Announced 20 Years After Release!

Fans of the hit stop motion film Chicken Run have awoken this morning to possibly the best news they have received in 20 years...there is a sequel in the works!

The surprise announcement was made during a Making Of online panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival by creators Aardman Studios, and later confirmed by Netflix on Twitter.

In a statement published on the Aardman website the companies Co-Founder and Creative Director, Peter Lord said he is "delighted to announce" the sequel.

“Fans around the world have waited patiently for a sequel idea worthy of Chicken Run so we’re delighted to announce, on the 20th anniversary, that we’ve found the perfect story.

Netflix feels like the ideal creative partner for this project too: they celebrate the film-maker, which means we can make the film we want to make – the one we really care about – and share it with a global audience.”

Chicken Run released in 2000 starred Mel Gibson, Miranda Richardson and Julia Sawalha, and told the story of a group of fowls who discovered their farm life had a rather bleak end and decided to plot their escape.

Although it is still unclear whether the original voice cast will return, Aardman has hinted at a plot for the sequel which flips the original storyline on its head.

Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete.

But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk – this time, they’re breaking in!
