As the summer holidays approach SA Police are calling on River Murray users to respect the river.
Safety checks together with random alcohol and drug testing are set to form part of the approach this summer, with boat operators, observers and skiers reminded a blood alcohol limit of 0.05 applies.
Officer in Charge of Murray Mallee Region, Superintendent Cindy Healey said “Water Operations and Marine Safety Officers will be on the river patrolling for the next few months as people start to enjoy everything the river has to offer,”
“Police will make sure everyone is acting responsibly while on the water, by detecting breaches of the Harbours and Navigation Act.”
SAPOL is also part of the River Muray Safety Working Group, led by Royal Life Saving Society who are also promoting their Respect the River – Make the Right Call campaign this summer.
River Murray Safety Working Group is reminding everyone to:
- Know the conditions – look out for changing river flows and hidden hazards
- Avoid alcohol around water
- Always wear a lifejacket when boating, fishing or kayaking
- Don’t overestimate your swimming abilities
- Always supervise children around water
- Never go alone. Always plan to swim, boat, paddle or fish with someone else
- Make safe choices so everyone can enjoy the water and return home safely.
