The state opposition has unveiled their plan to better protect the state from biosecurity threats.

They’ve pledged to roll-out a  $13 million Biosecurity Preparedness Plan with threats impacting the Riverland such as fruit fly and Varroa mite high on the priority list.

Under the proposal, a Biosecurity Readiness Fund would be established which would improve the state’s ability to respond quickly to outbreaks.

Ashton Hurn MP, State Liberal Leader, said “No one knows what the next threat is, where it will come from or which crops may be at risk and so this Plan has practical measures that ensure our State can respond swiftly and effectively.”

Riverland based Shadow Minister for Primary Industries Nicola Centofanti echoed those calls saying it was critical to have a genuine partnership with industry and primary producers.

“Whether it’s fruit fly outbreaks in the Riverland, varroa mite, tomato brown rugose virus or abalone disease, South Australian producers are constantly on the frontline of biosecurity threats,” Dr Centofanti said.
