Credit card warning for business operators

Murray Mallee Police are calling for business owners to be vigilant when dealing with credit card transactions either in person, online or over the phone.

While over the phone credit card payments are common practice for some local businesses, Police have recently received reports that some payments have been made with a stolen credit card.

Some tips for business owners from Police include,

  • Being alert for customers that act in an unusual manner, such as appearing flustered when answering questions or appearing to be in a hurry
  • If the card holder is present check for alterations to the card
  • Check the signature matches the name on the card
  • Should anything create suspicion consider asking for further identification, such as photo ID-If the card holder is not present consider contacting the bank’s Authorisations Centre to obtain authorisation
  • If the transaction is not authorised hold onto the card and call 131 444
