Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas has opened up about a scary on-stage moment that left his longtime bandmate Paul Doucette needing a quick check-up.

My best friend in the world, and I think I almost killed him, and I feel really bad about this.”

During the Matchbox Twenty’s recent set at the Illinois State Fair. Frontman Rob Thomas swung his microphone stand around and accidentally hit Paul Doucette’s head live on stage in front of the crowd.
Some may have thought that this was a planned segment for the show, but it turns out the impact was so strong that it smashed Doucette’s in ear monitors to pieces.
This hit forced him to leave the stage to seek event medical attention briefly.

Doucette soon returned and took the mishap in good humour. He reminded Thomas that he’d been warning him for years about swinging the stand around.

“I knew it was only a matter of time,” he joked.

After the show, Doucette posted an Instagram video from the tour bus showing a piece of the shattered in-ear monitor being carefully removed from his ear. Still smiling, he said:
“So, here’s what’s happening right now: Rob took me out.”

Matchbox Twenty continue their current North American run with support from the Goo Goo Dolls.
